The All-Stars from Chandler National Little League are headed west this week, looking for a chance to eventually go east — possibly all the way to Williamsport, Pa.

Chandler Nationa’s South Majors all-star team will embark for San Bernardino, Calif., July 31 to play for Little League baseball’s West Regional title. If they win there: the Little League World Series in Williamsport awaits.

The Chandler team, which won the state championship last weekend in Gilbert, is unbeaten so far after district and state tournament play. Chandler will face Northern California on Friday, Aug. 2, Utah on Saturday Aug. 3, Nevada on Tuesday Aug. 6, Hawaii Wednesday, Aug. 7, and, if they make it, the semifinals and championship game will take place Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10.

Doug Brewster, CNLL League president, said he is currently trying to set up a viewing party at Barro’s Pizza at 1880 S. Alma School Road during the Wednesday game against Hawaii, which will air on ESPN 3 — a high-definition sports network similar to cable’s ESPN or ESPN2, but instead offered online.

“The guys are all excited to represent Arizona,” Brewster said.

If the CNLL South Majors win the West regional championship game, which will be aired on ESPN, they will head to Williamsport for the LLWS form Aug. 15-25.

Chandler National has been to the Little League World Series twice in its history, appearing in 2003 and 2007, with nearby Ahwatukee Little League representing the area and the West region at the 2006 event.

Chandler National South won the state championship July 26 when it defeated Mesa’s Desert Ridge Little League team 14-3 in the final.

A run to Willamsport this year would be slightly different for CNLL, considering that in 2008, the league split itself geographically into North and South divisions, once pressure mounted after making the LLWS twice in five years.

“Little League was wanting us to split before the 2007 season, after the 2007 they really wanted us to split,” Brewster said. “(Reaching regionals) does make it more impressive based on our player count with splitting up into a North and South.”

Last year, CNLL’s North Majors team won the Arizona state title and a regional berth in San Bernardino

Fundraising efforts for any of the South team’s remaining trips this season are also underway. Two Valley Someburros restaurants — one in Chandler and the other in Gilbert — donated 20 percent of all sales made Tuesday, July 30, and the Water N Ice Superstore, located at 2945 E. Riggs Road in Chandler, previously held a fundraiser for the team too. Funds collected went to cover the team’s travel expenses.

Someburros in Chandler is located on 3461 W. Frye Road (West of the 101 in front of Target — behind the movie theater at Chandler Mall) and is open daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Someburros in Gilbert is located on 2597 S. Market Street (South of Williamsfield Road on Market Street) and is also open daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
