Mesa school psychologist Scott Nelson plans to complete a 13.1-mile hand bicycle event 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 16 at Ahwatukee YMCA to raise awareness of bone marrow transplants.

During the event, community members can give a DNA sample (collected with a swab of the mouth) to become donors. The event is in honor of Mesa mom and school psychologist Kelly Anderson.

Anderson under went a bone marrow transplant Dec. 29 in her fight against acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood or bone marrow. She was diagnosed in March 2010 with the disease.

According to Nelson and Anderson's blog, she is still hospitalized waiting to see whether or not her body accepts the transplant.

For more information about bone marrow transplants, go to www.bethematch.com. For more information on Anderson, see www.aasp-az.org/.
