East Valley voters casting ballots Tuesday must bring identification to the polls.

The November 2004 approval of Proposition 200 requires voters to show either one photo identification or two pieces of nonphoto identification.

In previous elections, voters only stated their name and address. Early voting forms are not affected.

If a voter does not bring proper identification, the voter can cast a provisional ballot and return within three days with identification.

A Grand Canyon State Poll conducted by the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University, however, showed that more than one-third of 527 randomly selected registered voters statewide say they are unfamiliar with new voter identification.

“Our barometer is going to be at 7 p.m. (Tuesday),” said Maricopa County elections department spokeswoman Yvonne Reed. “Then we will know whether we’ve gotten our message out.”

In the East Valley, there are elections in Chandler, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Tempe and the Kyrene Elementary School District.

This is the first election that incorporates the changes made by Proposition 200, an initiative that targeted illegal immigration. The proposition also requires proof of citizenship to register to vote and proof of eligibility for nonfederally mandated public benefits.

Voting information, including a polling place locator, is available at www.recorder.mari copa.gov or the Maricopa County Elections Department at (602) 506-1511. Polling places will be open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
