If you’re planning to drink and drive, don’t. Officers across the Valley will beef up DUI patrols this holiday weekend as revelers celebrate the Fourth of July.
More than 100 officers from multiple agencies will converge Tuesday night on Tempe Town Lake, Tempe police Sgt. Dan Masters said. The officers will monitor the expected 100,000 people at the celebration and fireworks display, he said.
Two squads of Mesa motorcycle officers have been out since Friday looking for drunken drivers. The DUI patrol will continue through Tuesday, on which day a DUI van will be at Power and McDowell roads.
And the Apache Junction police Swarm Team that targets drunken drivers will cover the city’s 175 miles of roads on Monday and Tuesday.
Police are encouraging people who will be drinking to plan ahead and have a designated driver.
“One of the first things to go when somebody starts drinking is their judgment,” Mesa traffic officer Tim Gaffney said. “Unfortunately, we find a lot of good people that just make poor decisions and decide to get behind the wheel.”
