Ready for Chandler's Day of Play at Tumbleweed Park?

By Liam O'Mahony

Next Saturday, Oct. 16 promises to be a fun morning for everyone at Tumbleweed Park as the City of Chandler Community Services Department presents Shape Up Arizona at Chandler's Day of Play from 8 a.m. to noon.

The city has partnered with Shape Up US, a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive wellness programs, and the Chandler Unified School District to host this fourth annual free community event for all ages to enjoy a variety of exciting outdoor activities.

This occasion also commemorates Chandler's selection as a "Playful City USA" winner for the fourth consecutive year, making it one of 18 cities across the country to have this distinction since the award started in 2007.

For runners, another reason to come to Tumbleweed Park for the Day of Play is the Fit City Chandler 5K Fun Run presented by Shape Up US and Club del Sport. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the run starts at 8 a.m. The race fee is $25 until Oct. 15 and $30 the day of the event. Register at www.FitCityChandler.com.

The Day of Play recognizes the importance of teaching fitness, health and wellness to children and will offer more than 100 booths with games, activities and information organized by Chandler's Aquatics, Center for the Arts, Library, Museum, Parks and Recreation Divisions, non-profit organizations and many Valley businesses. In addition to the interactive games and fitness demonstrations, vendors will distribute information on leading a healthy lifestyle.

A sampling of participants includes the ASU Cheerleaders; Sportball Phoenix, Kangoo Club Arizona, AZ Velocity & Coba Cobras Jump Rope Team, Mascot Olympics and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Amanda Bordon. From bean bag tosses to face painting to parachute games to tug-o-war, there will be something for everyone. If you attend, stop by the information booth and tell staff you read about Day of Play in this online East Valley Tribune column and receive a souvenir bag or soft frisbee while supplies last.
