Police arrested a woman breeding cats in her Gilbert condominium Thursday afternoon for animal cruelty.

Jill Hopper was caught with 46 cats, five deceased, in her home near Lakeside and Val Vista drives, according to Gilbert police spokesman Jesse Sanger.

Gilbert police were called to the home after neighbors complained about a smell, said Melissa Gable with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

Gable said the cats are going to a county shelter. She said Hopper has not signed the cats over to the facility so there will likely be a court case.

Hopper is being charged with animal cruelty and the home has been deemed unfit for human habitation, Sanger said.
