A speciality, full-service market unique to the Valley is coming to Chandler as the anchor tenant of the Promenade at Fulton Ranch, taking over the spot vacated by AJ’s Fine Foods.
The grocery store, which is still being developed and does not yet have a name, is expected to open in June at the northeast corner of Chandler Heights and Alma School roads, said Jay Thorne, a spokesman for RED Development, the project’s developer.
Darin Hill and his Hill Arizona Grocery Company promise a store with fresh fish, meat, a full-service deli, local artisan baked goods, general grocery items, organic produce, natural gourmet foods and a cafe with fresh food and coffee.
Hill Arizona Grocery Company also owns two natural food grocery stores in Telluride, Colo., and Ridgway, Colo., and three IGA grocery stores in Wilcox, Heber and St. Johns.
“He’s trying to do the same thing here (as his store in Telluride),” Thorne said. “Whether or not he’ll be doing others (in the Valley) remains to be seen.”
Hill wanted to start a grocery store in the Phoenix Metro area, and Chandler was a “great place to start,” Thorne said.
Chandler Mayor Boyd Dunn is excited Hill chose Chandler for the new concept.
“Our vision for south Chandler has always been one complete with unique, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants with easy walking access for nearby residents,” said Dunn in a statement. “The addition of the new market at The Promenade lends itself to that vision. We know that this will be just another step toward a strong recovery for retail in Chandler.”
A name and a logo for the new store is expected within the next couple of weeks, Thorne said.
