Police say a man was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Chandler on Wednesday night.

The shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. on Frye Road between Alma School and Dobson Roads.

According to police spokesman Joseph Favazzo, shortly after 8 p.m. officers received a call of a disturbance involving a man at a Chandler Regional Hospital.

A responding officer saw a man matching a description of the suspect, 50-year-old Steven Hernandez, walking along Frye Road.

Favazzo said the officer stopped in the middle of Frye Road to try and talk to Hernandez. The suspect immediately shot at the officer and the officer returned fire hitting the suspect.

Authorities said the officer was not injured. Hernandez was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the officer is on routine paid administrative leave. He has not been identified at this time.
