Gilbert Hospital, on Power Road between Williams Field and Ray Road, has purchased 10 acres at the southwest corner of Franklin Road and Hunt Highway near master planned community Anthem at Merrill Ranch. This is the first 10 acres of a planned 40-acre medical complex.

David Wanger, CEO of the hospital, said he expects the name of the facility to be Florence Hospital at Anthem.

"This makes our plans official," Wanger said in a news release. "We are very excited to start development of a full service, general acute care hospital for the greater Florence communities."

The planned Florence hospital will be modeled after the Gilbert Hospital, which boasts a "Door to Doc in 31 minutes" motto. Hospital officials say it is one of the busiest emergency departments in the East Valley, seeing more than 51,000 patients in 2007. It opened in February 2006 and is open 24 hours every day.

Hospital officials said the Florence hospital is planned to be a 60,000-square-foot, two-story building that houses 36 inpatient beds, 20 emergency department rooms and two operating rooms. The facility should employ about 350 people after the first year.

The hospital also will have an MRI, CT scan, digital X-ray, ultrasound, laboratory and blood bank. In the future, hospital planners expect to add a full service pharmacy, two medical office buildings and specialty physicians.

Officials of Pulte Homes, a developer of Anthem, said residents are buzzing about the hospital, which also will serve the surrounding Santan community.

"The growth in Florence and surrounding communities is tremendous, and with this growth comes the need for many services including hospitals," said Brad Schoenberg, vice president of operations for Pulte Homes.
