Expansion plans for Arizona State University are stretching beyond its main campus.
Arizona State University East in Mesa, Arizona State University West in Phoenix and the ASU Downtown Center in Phoenix are undergoing construction or being considered for major building.
There also are plans for an ASU Scottsdale Center for New Technology and Innovation, an arts and business district gateway at Mill Avenue and University Drive in Tempe and a Motorola building ASU purchased in its research park.
Almost every major Valley city is getting a piece of the new ASU.
"It is a commitment on the part of the university to become more serious about ASU as an entity that can contribute to the economy,’’ said Rob Melnick, ASU’s associate vice president of economic affairs.
Upgrades at each campus include:
• Interdisciplinary Science and Technology III — 37,000 square feet. The $12 million comes through research infrastructure money approved by the state Legislature in 2003. Construction begins this year.
• ASU East Student Union — 27,600 square feet, including a student lounge, game room, dining facility. The $4.5 million cost was paid for through ASU-issued bonds. It was completed in July.
• Agri-Business Center renovations — 40,000 square feet, including classrooms, an auditorium, a golf swing laboratory, a golf club repair room and marketing research and consumer behavior labs. The cost: $6.5 million in bonds. It was finished in July.
• A new residence hall opened in 2003. It was paid for through an agreement between ASU and a private developer.
• Addition to a classroom building — The $20.8 million add-on was paid for through an agreement with a private developer.
• Conceptual plans for a new 2-million-square-foot ASU Capitol Center campus — Phoenix possibly would buy land and build the campus.
Tempe also will get:
• Arizona Biomedical Collaborative — 35,000 square feet. The cost would be split between ASU ($10 million) and the University of Arizona ($7 million), all from the research infrastructure bill passed by the Legislature this year.
• School of Life Sciences and Engineering — Conceptual. Would replace engineering center. Cost: $100 million.
• Arizona Biodesign Institute III and IV — Conceptual. Cost: $200 million.
• Academic building renovations — Completed in fall 2006. Cost: $30 million in bonds.
• Lab renovations — Some are completed and others have not yet begun. Cost: $10 million in bonds.
• Labs for new researchers and faculty — $20 million in bonds.
• Infrastructure and utility enhancements — $7.4 million in bonds.
