PHOENIX - A Sept. 3 trial date has been set in the Serial Shooter case but it remains unclear which of the two suspects will be tried first.

Dale Hausner, 34, and Samuel Dieteman, 32, face multiple counts stemming from a 14-month shooting spree in 2005 and 2006.

Prosecutors believe they randomly shot and killed seven pedestrians, wounded 17 more and killed several animals.

Both men could be sentenced to death if convicted.

Prosecutors want to try Hausner first with Dieteman's trial following immediately.

On Friday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Roland Steinle set Sept. 3 as the starting date, regardless of which suspect is tried first.

Neither Steinle, prosecutors or defense attorneys has ruled out trying the two men at the same time in the same courtroom, but with separate juries.

Hausner's attorney, Ken Everett, told the court that he expected the trial to last at least six months.
