AT&T has announced new broadband cell sites in Tempe and Chandler to upgrade mobile coverage for customers in the area.

A site in Tempe will boost coverage around the intersection of Broadway and Rural roads. One in Chandler will enhance coverage in the area of Alma School Road and the Santan Freeway stretch of Loop 202.

The communications company said the mobile broadband upgrades should mean better web surfing, faster file downloads and support for the latest mobile apps.

“In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA will strengthen and expand our network in Tempe and Chandler,” said Jennifer Biry, AT&T’s Arizona vice president and general manager, in a press release. “If approved, this deal means that we’ll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband – 4G LTE – from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent.”

AT&T’s plan to buy T-Mobile from German telecommunications firm Deutsche Telekom, announced in March, is awaiting federal regulatory approval. The New York Times reported the deal would create the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., surpassing Verizon and Sprint Nextel.
