New York-based artist Mary Anne Erickson who is known for her renderings of Americana and vanishing roadside culture, is helping to raise funds for the restoration of Mesa’s iconic Diving Lady neon sign at the Starlite Motel. Erickson is selling 50 limited edition prints of the diving lady she painted in 2007 and donating $100 from the sales to the Mesa Preservation foundation which needs $25,000 to place the restored sign back in place. What a shame that on Wednesday morning there was a Mesa PD shooting incident with an Illegal Alien at a motel right next door to the StarLite Motel....at the Sun Land Motel.
Many of us old geezers can remember when Main Street in Mesa was a mecca for the tired traveler from California. When the StarLite Motel with it's "air-cooled" rooms were a much needed haven for the hot families traveling to New Mexico and beyond. There were no "air-cooled" motel until you got to Lordsburg, New Mexico...about 6-7 hours driving time. Us kids even loved the "un-heated" ice cold pool at the StarLite.....lol.
How times have changed for much of Main Street. What used to be a haven for the weary California traveler is now become a haven for the Illegal Aliens from Mexico.
