A special education teacher in Gilbert has been crowned Miss Arizona USA and will represent the state in the national pageant in spring 2008.

Kimberly Joiner, 22, of Gilbert teaches adaptive physical education for special education students at eight Gilbert schools: Finley Farms Elementary, Canyon Rim Elementary, Greenfield Junior High, Gilbert Junior High, South Valley Junior High, Highland Junior High, Desert Ridge High and Gilbert High schools.

“She is very intelligent, extremely generous and caring,” said Misty Nink, Joiner’s older sister who lives in Mesa. “She’s someone I look up to, even though she’s younger than me.”

Joiner has always lived in Gilbert. “I love to watch Gilbert grow,” she said. “Even though it’s growing, it still has a small town feel.”

She graduated from Highland High School in 2003 and from Arizona State University in 2006.

She said she teaches at two or three schools each weekday and has worked with special education children for many years.

“I’ve been volunteering since I was in junior high,” Joiner said. “I grew to love it. I love to help people. I look forward to work every day.”

She was crowned Miss Arizona USA Oct. 21 at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix.

The date and location for the Miss USA 2008 pageant have not been set.
