Two women are in critical condition after a minivan they were traveling in collided with a semi trailer at a busy Chandler intersection on Wednesday, causing a fuel tank on the semi to explode after hitting an electric utility box.
The semi was traveling westbound on Ray Road when it came upon the minivan at Alma School Road about 11:30 a.m. as the van was attempting to make a left-hand turn, according to Chandler police spokesman Sgt. Joe Favazzo.
The crash sent the van left of center into oncoming traffic on Ray Road west of Alma School.
The semi veered off the road and one of its fuel tanks was ripped from underneath as it struck an electrical utility box and exploded before hitting a concrete wall and a palm tree, Favazzo saidTwo critical after collision-explosion.
The van was heavily damaged and the side of the semi trailer was charred from the explosion. The driver’s side of the windshield was broken and had a large hole in it.
The condition of the driver of the semi was not available.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash and the intersection of Ray and Alma School is expected to be closed for several more hours.
