The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale has announced the eight finalists for the clubs' 2008 Youth of the Year, including three from Scottsdale high schools and two from the Paradise Valley Unified School District.
The winner will be announced March 29 at the Celebrate Youth Dinner and Auction at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center.
The group of finalists includes six girls and two boys who were selected based on the club's five core values: home and family, community service, scholastic achievement, moral character and service to the club.
The finalists for the club's highest honor were selected from a pool of 20, and they are: Allison Kueffner of Saguaro High School, Katie Loker of Desert Mountain High School, Caitlin Peil of Coronado High School, Samantha Fitzgerald of Horizon High School and Carly Froyum of Pinnacle High School.
Peter Anderelli of Fountain Hills School, Jeremiah Shaw of Mesa's Riverview High School and Nichelle Yazzie of Higley High School also are finalists.
"We're looking forward to another great selection process," said Becky Hornack, spokeswoman for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. "They're very diverse in age. These individuals are all very dedicated in their service to the club."
The Celebrate Youth Dinner and Auction is sponsored by General Dynamics and Casino Arizona.
The theme for this year's event is "The Power of Technology."
The Arizona state finalist for Youth of the Year will be announced during the State Youth of the Year Breakfast scheduled for April 22 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.
The winner of the state competition advances to the Pacific Region Youth of the Year competition held in June and national finals in September.
