A gallon of milk, a pound of butter and a bronchial examination? North Scottsdale residents could soon be modifying their grocery list after Saturday’s opening of a new clinic to treat minor ailments inside a Bashas’ on Scottsdale Road and Grayhawk Drive.

The clinic, among the first of its kind in the state, is staffed by nurse practitioners who can diagnose and treat everything from colds and flus to pink eye and rashes.

“I think its a great idea,” said Scottsdale resident and Bashas’ shopper Eugene Watkins. “I would definitely use it. Its convenient”

The 400-square-foot clinic features two private exam rooms, a lab, restroom and small waiting area. It will be open seven days a week.

“Its so important in medicine to be available for people,” said Laura Werking, a family nurse practitioner who works in the office. “Usually it will take longer to fill out the paperwork than it will to get seen and be treated.”

The average visit is about 15 minutes, she said.

“Overall the Phoenix metro market is lacking in its (accessibility) to health care,” said Rob Tofil, CEO of MediMin, the company that opened the clinic.

Treatment costs about $50 a visit, about half the cost of an urgent care facility, he said. People with or without insurance will be treated.

Nurse practitioners in Arizona can work independently and write prescriptions for many of the same conditions as doctors, Tofil said. A doctor will also be on call at the clinic.

The new health care concept is only available in a handful of grocery stores nationwide. But it is quickly becoming popular.
