A taxicab driver was shot to death Wednesday in the Arcadia neighborhood of east Phoenix during an apparent robbery, said Phoenix police Sgt. Lauri Williams.
James Barker, 46, was found slumped over the steering wheel of the Discount Cab car he was driving near 39th Street and Clarendon Avenue, Williams said.
Several neighbors heard gunfire and called 911 about 11:40 p.m. Some went outside and saw a person running away from the cab, Williams said.
Barker was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Williams said it appears robbery was a motive, but it was not immediately clear whether anything was taken.
Police do not have a description of the person seen running from the cab.
LaMont Jackson, risk management director for Discount Cab, said the company has worked to equip cabs with video cameras, and advises drivers to walk or drive away at the hint of a threat.
