Valley transit ridership rose 5.1 percent over the same period from one year ago, based on boardings for a one-year period that ended June 30. Valley Metro reported more than 71 million boardings during that time, including 13.5 million passengers on Metro light rail.
Light rail ridership rose 5.9 percent, to an average daily ridership of 42,000. Metro had several record-breaking days in the past year, including 62,227 boardings on the Arizona Diamondbacks home opener game on April 6. Also, bus ridership was higher in nearly every month over the same time one year ago.
Valley Metro CEO Steve Banta attributed the increase to higher gas prices and an improved local economy that produced more employment.
