The Roman Catholic church will ordain the first auxiliary bishop for the diocese of Phoenix at a special mass next week.

The mass to ordain Eduardo Alanis Nevares as a bishop is expected to draw about 2,000 of the faithful. Nevares will serve as a full time assistant to Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted.

The 56-year-old is a native of San Antonio who was ordained as a priest in 1981. He had several parish assignments in Texas and most recently served as the vice rector of a Catholic college in Ohio.

The mass of ordination will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Avondale. The mass will be webcast at www.catholictvmass.com and broadcast on Immaculate Heart Radio 1310 AM in the Phoenix area.

The Phoenix diocese serves more than 750,000 Catholics.
