As a way to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and show appreciation for the sacrifices of military personnel, the City of Mesa’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program is coordinating with HandsOn Greater Phoenix for a community service project on MLK Day — Monday, Jan. 21 — to paint the exterior of the home of a retired disabled Air Force veteran.

The project will take place from 8 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, although those who are 16 or 17 and wish to participate without a parent or guardian present must bring a signed youth waiver form with them to the project.

For more information, visit www.handsonphoenix.org and click on the “Weekend of Service Projects” link on the home page.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be honored in Mesa through a series of events between Jan. 18 and Jan. 21; the events include the annual MLK Parade on Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to noon and the MLK Festival at the Mesa Arts Center from noon to 5 p.m.
