The words “luxury” and “gourmet” aren’t normally attached to a gas station and car wash. But a Detroit family that has relocated to the Valley is attempting to blend the two concepts in a new auto service business under construction in north Scottsdale.

Not your average “pit stop,” the Scottsdale Auto Salon will feature such amenities as a gourmet restaurant, VIP lounge, champagne drinks, large-screen plasma televisions, concierge service and 100-octane racing fuel for your Ferrari or Lamborghini.

“We wanted to combine our family’s love of the auto industry with a business that serves customers on a level previously unmatched in the Valley,” said owner Dr. Arnold Curry, a Detroit physician who developed a passion for high-performance vehicles. “We also want to entertain them from the moment they walk in the door to the moment they drive away.”

Curry and his sons, Joseph and Mark, hope to tap into a market that has turned the Barrett-Jackson Auto Show and Phoenix International Raceway into Valley institutions. In the process, they are attempting to take the routine car wash and service station experience to a whole new level.

For example, two of the eight fuel pumps will dispense racing fuel for vehicles with high-performance engines. Regular grades of gasoline also will be provided by Valero Energy Corp., a San Antonio-based gasoline refiner and marketer, at prices competitive with other Scottsdale service stations, said salon spokeswoman Allison Francis.

The car wash section will feature a full-service 150-foot-long tunnel equipped with the latest automatic car washing machinery with sufficient space to accommodate stretched limos. Full-service car washes providing cleaning of both the exterior and interior will range in price from $9 to $19.

A second express tunnel will allow the customer to stay inside the vehicle as it goes through the car wash. Express washes will cost $6 or $8, depending on the level of service desired.

A third washing lane will provide extra space for RVs, boats and other oversized vehicles to receive hand washes.

Finally, the “Victory Lane” detail center will offer the ultimate in car cleaning, with everything done by hand and no machine touching the vehicles. Victory Lane customers will be provided a concierge escort and have access to the VIP lounge. Tucked behind one-way glass, the lounge will be equipped with five 42-inch plasma screens that will allow customers to watch their vehicles being cleaned and polished via closed-circuit TV.

Cost of Victory Lane service is $40 and up.

The public area will feature a Cafe Monaco fresh-food restaurant with dishes such as Modena roast beef and Zagato turkey sandwiches made to order in a kitchen on the premises. The area will be wired with free Wi-Fi service, and 50-inch plasma TV screens will provide entertainment. An array of wines, champagne and imported beers will be available from 15 coolers. Visitors and transplants from other parts of the United States will be able to purchase regional specialties from back home such as “Tastykakes” from Philadelphia and “Faygo” soda from Detroit.

Also available will be Porsche, Ferrari and Corvette logo apparel and merchandise, and exotic vehicles will be displayed on a rotating basis. Special events are planned such as barbecues and block parties featuring race-car drivers and other celebs.

“We want the Scottsdale Auto Salon to be an entertainment destination for people Valley-wide no matter what kind of car they drive,” said Joseph Curry. “Bentleys and Ferraris will share the same space as Hondas and Hyundais.”

The facility, which is located at Bell Road and 94th Street, is expected to open in late October.
