Gilbert Boy Scout Troop 522 has volunteered to take over flag protocol for Memorial Day at the Gilbert Unified School District office. "Protocol requires that the flag be raised at sunrise and then immediately lowered to half-staff. Then at noon, the flag is raised to full-staff again," district spokeswoman Dianne Bowers said. "Because Memorial Day is a school holiday, none of our staff will be here to take care of this important function. When Troop 522 Scoutmaster Tim Smith learned of this, he volunteered his troop members to take care of the flag observance."
