Chandler police arrested three people including a Tempe man on suspicion of vehicle burglary early Friday, moments after an alert neighbor called 911 and told police he saw the men breaking into the car.
Police arrested Joel Arthur, 19, of Tempe, Rudy Stegeman, 23, of Phoenix and Joseph Lugo, 27, on suspicion of burglary, theft and possession of burglary tools and drugs. Lugo, a transient who police say was driving the getaway car, also was cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license, according to police.
Police received the call about 3 a.m. reporting that three men were breaking into a vehicle in the 4300 block of East Cherry Hills Drive before fleeing in a black sport utility vehicle.
After police stopped the vehicle, officers confiscated a stolen firearm and drugs including marijuana.
All three men were booked into a Maricopa County jail.
Police said the arrests were made possible by an alert citizen who provided detailed information about the suspect’s vehicle and the direction from which they left the scene. Police also encourage residents to become involved in watching for suspicious activity in neighborhoods by joining a neighborhood block watch program.
