Are you wondering what to do with your dad for Father's Day next Sunday? Have you considered venturing to Veterans Oasis Park or Desert Breeze Park for an urban fishing excursion? What about a bike ride or jog along Paseo Trail? Perhaps, he would enjoy a relaxing afternoon at one of the six Chandler Aquatics Centers or playing some doubles at the Chandler Tennis Center.

These are just a few recreational options to ponder as dad's day approaches. Below are a few other activities and notes to share with him as you plan an enjoyable weekend in town. I also invite you to sign up for the monthly Chandler Recreation e-newsletter that is e-mailed prior to the start of each month. You can sign up easily at www.chandleraz.gov/listserv.html by entering your e-mail address in the "Parks & Recreation News" opt-in box. If you have already signed up, we thank you, as the list is approaching 1,000 subscribers.

Mesquite Groves

If you are near a television Monday morning from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., tune into Fox-10 TV's "Arizona Morning" show as host Cory McCloskey visit's Chandler's Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center at 5901 S. Hillcrest Drive, adjacent to Basha High School. The facility, one of six public pools that the Chandler Aquatics Division operates, will be a year old next month. The program will conduct live shots with McCloskey showcasing youth swim lessons and the interactive water theme-park-like amenities of the facility.

Mesquite Groves will host a special "Father's Day" event next Sunday from noon to 2 p.m., with poolside activities and family admission just $1 during this time. Now that school is out, all six Chandler pools are open daily for summer operations. For information on hours and policies, call (480) 782-2733 or visit www.chandleraz.gov/aquatics. For swim lessons and program information, check out the summer Break Time at www.chandleraz.gov/breaktime. To rent a pool for a private party, call (480) 782-2753.

Great Snakes, Arizona!

The Environmental Education Center will partner with the Arizona Herpetological Association for an intriguing presentation about the fascinating reptiles that call Arizona home from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. The presentation is $6 for all ages and will feature live animal demonstrations of snakes, chuckwallas, and other native reptiles. Children under 6 are admitted for free and need not register as long as a paid participant accompanies them. I wrote about the EEC's "Father's Day Breakfast With the Snakes" a couple weeks ago, and just wanted to note that there are still some openings for this activity that runs Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ($14 per person). Dads will enjoy a light breakfast with the children while sharing an experience with nature. Participants will learn about Arizona's snakes and have a chance to pet the live snakes on exhibit at the EEC. There also will be an opportunity to watch the snakes enjoy their breakfast as well. Mothers and other caregivers are welcome too. Payment and pre-registration are required. Call (480) 782-2890 or visit www.chandleraz.gov/registration to sign up.

TRC For Your High-Tech Needs!

Did you know the Tumbleweed Recreation Center offers free Wi-Fi access in the lobby, lounge, snack vending area and courtyard? Even if you don't bring a laptop, you can use your Chandler Library card to log on to one of many computers in the public lab or lounge. Guests can also sign up for a library card at the TRC. The teen Game Pod also has several computer stations and interactive video games for youth and teens during the new extended summer drop-in hours of noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday ($2 for 8-12 year olds and $3 for 13-17 year olds).

The TRC also has lockers with free programmable locks that customers can take advantage of by customizing their own combination while working out or participating in other programs at the facility. Upstairs on the fitness floor, there is a new computer kiosk station where customers can register for free with a Life Fitness USB Tracker program through their personal email. This software tracks and monitors exercise progress via any USB flash drive, which can be plugged into selected exercise machines to collect workout information. Call (480)782-2907 for more information or ask any TRC staff member for assistance.

Teen Adventure Camp

The annual Chandler Recreation Teen Adventure Camp was recently relocated from Andersen Junior High School to Santan Junior High School at 1550 E. Chandler Heights Road. The camp features a different theme each week, ranging from science to arts to sports, and includes a field trip and visit to Arrowhead Pool. The camp runs Monday through Friday in half- and full-day sessions through July 17. There are still openings; register or at www.chandleraz.gov/registration or call (480) 782-2711 for more information.

Fourth of July at Tumbleweed Park!

It won't be long until Independence Day, and Tumbleweed Park will once again host the 4th of July 7Up Fireworks Spectacular, presented by the Chandler Lions Club and City of Chandler. Admission is free and parking is $5 for the event that begins at 4 p.m. with numerous activities, music, food and beverage vendors. The fireworks are scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.
