A mother and her three children escaped a fire in their northwest Mesa apartment unharmed late Sunday afternoon.
The fire began in a bedroom in a small apartment complex near McKellips Road and Mesa Drive, said Deputy Chief Mike Dunn of the Mesa Fire Department.
“The mother came out and saw the fire, tried to put it out with an extinguisher real quick,” Dunn said.
She was unable to put out the fire herself, so the mother evacuated her family and then called 911 shortly before 5 p.m.
A fire engine was only a mile away at the time of the call, Dunn said.
“Because of that fast response time, they were able to keep the fire into the two bedrooms,” he said. “It didn’t spread anywhere beyond there.”
The fire’s cause isn’t determined, though it does not appear to be arson.
