A convenience store clerk reported to police that at about 3 a.m. today a man came into a store at 1955 W. University Drive in Mesa and started a conversation about stealing beer – and then stole beer from the store.

According to a police report, the man asked the clerk about beer sales after 2 a.m. The clerk said the coolers were locked and beer could not be sold. Then the man asked the clerk if he were to grab the beer from the display, would the clerk chase him.

The clerk said, “no.” The man then grabbed two cases of beer and ran out the door. Police say the beer bandit was described as a black man, 6-foot tall and 180 lbs. He was wearing a black hoodie, black jeans and an ASU cap.

The clerk also told police the man said he had a knife and was told to wait five minutes before calling police, which the clerk did. The man was not located.
