Female inmates in the yard at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Perryville.
Rep. Cecil Ash, R-Mesa, a former public defender, advocates for giving judges more discretion when sentencing non-violent offenders. His stance is part of a trend among conservatives toward addressing prison costs by re-examining sentencing guidelines for certain crimes.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery says Arizona's sentencing guidelines deter crime and as a result will bring down the prison population.

Reform schools do not reform their populations. But the name "reform" appeals to voters. The last time any Department of Corrections corrected anyone is ancient history. But like Department of Defense vs War Department, the name Corrections sounds better than does Bureau of Prisons.
What up and smell the rooses. Society generate deviant behavior. Society needs to figure out what it is doing wrong. Locking up societal problems is just another way of kicking the can down the road, an expensive way.
Why don't we find a more appealing name for Police Department? How does Department of Behavior Monitoring sould?

There are countless other stories around the country of this same situation. Once you allow private corporations to make a profit on previously government-run programs, you allow for corruption and runaway costs. What really surprises me is that there are people out there who support this insanity.

Who put this lady in prison should be held accountable and jailed themselves. This policing for profit and jailing everyone with pot is ridiculous!
One does more time for pot then rape, murder or child molestation. Where are the priorities![sad]

whether state or private prisons are being used, it still costs the state money it could use elsewhere. It always seems more profitable to fund schools and diversion programs and not prisons, but you cannot make education mandatory for adults if they refuse to make use of them, and many people go through the diversion programs with no intention of learning anything from them. People who use drugs and drive, who are given light sentences over and over again, eventually end up costing the state and the public more than if they were given a harsh sentence to begin with. It's difficult to judge who will benefit from leniency and who will not. Mistakes cause good people to lose much as they are incarcerated and bad people to cause more harm to the general public. We can only hope that the courts and congress have the wisdom to make the right choices.

Dale, did you even read the story before commenting on it? You state right off the bat that "The last time any Department of Corrections corrected anyone is ancient history" but the story starts right off the bat about Candita Gottsponer doing exactly what you say hasn't happened in anything but ancient history. Lots of people get a wake up call the first time they make it to the big house, and they become model citizens who after ten years can get their felonies off their records and even get their gun rights restored unless they did something really stupid like use a gun in the commission of a felony. The fact is that reform schools do reform those who are reformable. The rest just need to be locked up away from society for society's safety.
Dale, society generates deviant behavior? Society needs to figure out what it is doing wrong? So it's all society's fault? That's a lot like saying sin is God's fault because he gives us the freedom of choice. Maybe we have too much freedom? That seems to be the theme of most liberal/progressive/marxist ideologies.

“Incarceration has long been a growth industry in Arizona,” Bill Hart said.
In fact, our legislature increased spending for the Dept. of Corrections this year while reducing, by millions, funding for elementary education.
Notice the Arizona Prison graphic. In 1970 there were 1700 inmates; today there are over 40,000.
Candita Gottsponer took advantage of training as an auto mechanic while in prison even though she will never find work as a mechanic. She would have been better served if she had spent her year learning the art of ‘tire changer’; her chances of finding employment in a tire shop would have been better. She is currently employed as a house keeper/baby sitter.
“there are more effective, less-expensive strategies,” to quote Gelb .

So blue boy, it's unfortunate that education has to suffer as a result of an increase in crime, but you sound like you think crime was a result of the legislature's increased spending for the dept. of corrections. There is an increase in prisons as a result of increased crime. Name a less expensive strategy to putting criminals in prison, or do you really think the cart should come before the horse?
