Summer program integrates learning and earning for Mesa students

Online applications are available for the new Learn to Earn summer program sponsored by Mesa Counts on College. The pilot program is open to current Mesa Unified School District high school juniors who are at least 17 years old.

To access the application, visit The selection of participants will begin in April 2013.

This unique opportunity provides a stipend of up to $1,500 for participants to engage in hands-on work experience in healthcare careers.

The six-week program will be 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, from June 3 to July 11. A graduation ceremony is planned for the evening of July 11.

Learn to Earn will open with a weeklong orientation and career preparation skills. Students will spend four weeks in one of the following three Mesa healthcare facilities: Arizona Regional Medical Center, Mountain Vista Medical Center and Cardon Children’s Medical Center.

Participants will choose a career path to explore, such as imaging, lab services, business/administrative services, nursing, hospital plant operations, supply chain, nutritional services, pharmacy, child life services, perioperative services or therapy services.

College preparation activities are scheduled for the final week and include field trips to local higher education institutions and visits by Mesa colleges and university representatives.
