PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona soldier has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.
U.S. Army officials say 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Richard L. Berry, of Scottsdale, died Sunday.
They say he sustained serious injuries when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol.
At the time of the incident, Berry was serving in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan.
He had been assigned to the A Company, 508th Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Funeral services are pending.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Tuesday ordered state flags be flown at half-staff until sunset Wednesday "as special recognition and tribute" to the fallen soldier.
