The capping process has now begun at the Queen Creek landfill that closed in May 2007, according to a town statement.

Maricopa County officials are coordinating the hauling of fill dirt required by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality as a cap on the landfill, which is next to Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre on Riggs Road east of Hawes Road.

Knochel Brothers Construction, Inc. began grading on June 14 and the dirt hauling is anticipated to start at the end of July. The project should be complete by mid-October, according to the town.

During the hauling period there will be up to 400 trucks per day, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., on Hawes Road and Riggs Road. Traffic control and dust control measures will be in place, according to the town.

Information: Bradley White at Maricopa County Solid Waste Management, (602) 525-6491.
