Jayson Peters’ popular Nerdvana blog was named the best features blog in Arizona, and the East Valley Tribune advertising department placed second in the general excellence category during a pair of journalism awards programs in the state last weekend.
Judges in the Arizona Press Club Best Journalism in 2010 contest called the Nerdvana blog “a must-read for anyone interested in science fiction, comic books and the like.”
“His reporting is exhaustive, his writing clear... (and) level-headed that indulges readers’ appetite for in-depth treatment of the topic,” the category judge wrote.
Tribune managing editor Bob Romantic also won a second-place award in the Press Club contest for editorial writing among all newspapers in Arizona.
In the Arizona Newspapers Association Excellence in Advertising contest, the Tribune placed second in the largest classification for non-dailies, and also was runner-up in the best special section supplement for its “The Scene at San Tan Village” publication.
Individually, the Tribune had three first-place awards: Best color ad (Christy Byerly, Tonya Mildenberg, Bob Galusha) for “Goodstore Thrift”; most effective use of small space (Byerly) for “Kitty Penthouse”; and best online static ad (Mildenberg) for “Karen’s House Cleaners.”
In addition, Byerly and Alison Travis placed second in best black and white ad for “Dawn Oliphant”; and Mildenberg was third in best newspaper promotion for “We deliver the East Valley.”
