More than 50 family members of active military from all branches will get the rare opportunity today to welcome an admiral to Mesa. And not just any admiral, but the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Navy Second Fleet - Rear Admiral Scott E. Sanders.

Sanders' visit to a private dinner and reception at Bass Pro Shop's Fine Gun Room has been arranged by Arizona Navy Moms and the Blue Star Mothers of America. According to a news release, Sanders will discuss his command of an anti-piracy task group at sea, the Navy's mission in today's world, and the vital role that families play in the lives of serving military.

Sanders commanded 4,440 sailors on 19 ships from seven nations in a coalition counter-piracy force operating off the coast of Somalia, the release said. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (3), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement. As a civilian, he has worked for Wyle, Inc.'s Aerospace Group since 1987, where he is currently the vice president for strategic operations.

Two of the Valley's current Navy sailors - HM Dana Scott (SW) of Scottsdale, with Fleet Surgical Team Two based in Norfolk, Va., and AO2 Eric Draper (AW) of Tempe, with the USS Reagan out of San Diego - will also attend the dinner and reception.
