Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe were recognized as a Playful City USA community by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that promotes play in kids’ lives. The honor was the fourth year in a row for Chandler and Gilbert, and the second year for Mesa and Tempe.

Ten Arizona cities and 118 communities nationwide received the award.

Tempe and Mesa have scheduled Play Day events as part of the program. Tempe will hold a free event 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at Kiwanis Park, Mill Avenue and All-America Way. Activities include kayaking, open batting cages, tennis lessons, NFL Punt, Pass & Kick youth skills competition and other events. For more information, go to www.tempe.gov/events/playday.

Mesa has scheduled five play days from October through April. The first, on Oct. 23, will include bouncers, carnival games and a petting zoo. Details will be posted later at www.mesaaz.gov.
