An 800-pound cow that wandered into a Chandler neighborhood, rammed two police cruisers and charged at a 6-year-old boy, was shot and killed by police on Sunday, but its origins remain a mystery.
The minutes of mayhem began about 6 p.m. when police received a report that a cow was running around loose near Alma School and Queen Creek roads, according to Chandler police.
Instead of resigning itself into a corner where officers could corral it, the animal became aggressive in the parking lot near a former Target store and brushed up against the 6-year-old boy, whose leg was scraped, according to police.
After head-butting the police cruisers, the cow then ran into traffic along Ryan Road, moments before an officer shot it with a shotgun, killing it.
The animal did not have any brands to identify its origins and was removed by Animal Cremation Services of Glendale.
The bovine recently had its horns removed and was bleeding from around the area, police said.
It wasn't known whether the cow wandered into the neighborhood from the Gila River Indian Reservation or from the area of Bogle Junior High School, where there have been past reports of loose livestock.
"We don't know where it came from," said Detective Seth Tyler, a Chandler police spokesman.
Police said it is unusual for a cow on the loose to become aggressive.
"We're thinking it was scared more than anything else," Tyler said.
