An air pollution alert is in effect today for Maricopa County.
Ozone levels are expected to exceed federal standards and be a health risk, particularly for children, the elderly and adults with respiratory problems. They are cautioned to avoid outdoor activity.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is asking the public to help reduce ozone by carpooling, using public transportation and avoiding use of gasoline-powered lawn equipment. Refueling vehicles after dark also helps cut down on ozone buildup. Ozone can damage lung tissue, aggravate respiratory disease and increase the risk for respiratory infection.
