An elderly New Mexico woman died and her husband was found on a remote forest road Wednesday near Globe after the couple had been missing for several days following a visit to Chandler.

Dana Davis, 86, who left Chandler with his wife, Elizabeth, 82, on Dec. 1, was found by an Arizona Game & Fish Department officer walking along a forest road in a remote area east of Globe. His wife, Elizabeth, 82, was found deceased by Gila County Sheriff's deputies.

Dana Davis, who is recovering in a Globe hospital, told authorities that he and his wife were leaving Globe on Dec. 1 with the intent to travel on U.S. 60 to Socorro, N.M., but inadvertently ended up on U.S. 70. They tried to take a forest road to connect to U.S. 60, but after about six to 10 miles, their vehicle became disabled. At the same time, two winter storms moved in bringing snow and very cold temperatures to the area, according to a release from Chandler Police.

The Davises survived in their vehicle until Tuesday, Dec. 6, when they ran out of gas. They tried to hike back to the highway, but not long into the hike, Elizabeth Davis collapsed and died. Dana Davis told authorities he tried to revive his wife, then continued walking along the road through the night, where he took shelter under a tree.

He was found by an Arizona Game & Fish Department officer near U.S. 60 on Wednesday morning, and the Arizona Civil Air Patrol then located the Davis' vehicle.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene and deputies confirmed Elizabeth Davis had died.
