Carpool lanes are coming to the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in northwest Mesa - but not until fall of next year.

The first closure, however, comes this weekend. And there's another scheduled for the weekend after that, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

So construction crews can establish a work zone in the freeway's median, the freeway between Loop 101 and Country Club Drive will be closed one direction at a time over the next two weekends while temporary concrete barriers are placed and lanes shifted.

The eastbound lanes will be shut first, from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. During the same time frame on Friday, April 17, to Monday, April 20, it's the westbound lanes' turn to be off-limits.

ADOT, at a cost of $20.5 million, is constructing high-occupancy vehicle lanes on the nearly seven miles between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road.

This project is the latest in a series that will expand the carpool lane system along Valley freeways. Along Loop 101 in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Chandler, 30 miles of high-occupancy vehicle lanes are currently under construction; all are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Funding to build these lanes comes from Proposition 400, a voter-approved half-cent sales tax directed toward transportation projects.
