Starting this fall, Gilbert will begin its new election cycle on even-numbered years with the election of the town mayor and two council members.

The primary election will be Aug. 28 with the general election on Nov. 6.

Since candidates can be elected outright in the county-wide primary election ballot, it’s important to ensure that residents receive their ballots.

If you’re registered for one of the designated parties (Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green or Americans Elect) and on the permanent early voting list, then you will automatically receive an early ballot.

If you’re on the permanent early voting list and are registered as either an independent or “party not designated,” you need to respond to the postcard mailed to you. You can return it and request a town-only ballot or a party ballot for this election only. Options for the party ballot include Democrat, Republican, Green or Americans Elect. The Libertarian Party has closed its primary and a Libertarian ballot is not available for independent voters.

Early on-site voting is available at Gilbert Municipal Center, 50 E. Civic Center Drive, prior to the primary. This option is available from Aug. 2-23. Voters registered as either an independent or a “party not designated” will need to request a Town-only ballot or choose a party ballot for the primary. For other onsite voting locations where you can vote, visit www.recorder.maricopa.gov.

If you are currently not registered to vote, you can register at www.servicearizona.com or by obtaining a voter registration form at the clerk’s office, town libraries, post offices and other public buildings. Just make sure to register before July 30 if you want to vote in the primary election.
