A Chandler police officer has been arrested on domestic violence charges after he attempted to choke his girlfriend.

The incident happened on Wednesday, March 19, but was not reported to police until March 20. The officer turned himself into authorities on Thursday, according to police records.

The 42-year-old officer and his live-in girlfriend started arguing March 19 after the officer was apparently opening her mail, the report said.

The girlfriend reportedly told police that when she walked away from the kitchen, the officer pushed her onto the couch in the living room and put his hands around her neck, according to the police report.

The girlfriend's breathing was restricted due to the officer's body weight and placement of his hands on her neck, the report states. She then bit his hand and he released his grip.

The victim was taken to a local family center where a nurse said markings on the victim's neck were consistent with strangulation, according to the report.

The report also says that the officer called the victim's mother saying "I'm going to [expletive] kill her. I'm going to shoot her," in reference to the girlfriend. He also allegedly threatened to damage the victim's vehicle and allegedly attempted to remove the grill.

The officer left the house on Wednesday, but returned Thursday morning and began yelling and swearing at the victim. The woman locked herself in a bedroom and called the Chandler Police Department.

The officer was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, kidnapping and stalking.

ABC15 is not identifying the officer as he has not been formerly charged.
