A 22-year-old Mesa woman was not talking on her cell phone when she was gunned down late Sunday, police said. "She wasn't talking to anyone at the time of the shooting," Mesa Police spokesman Jerry Gissel said Tuesday.

On Monday, Rudy Reyes Jr., 20, who described himself as a close friend of Robin Blasnek, said she was on her way to his house and they were talking on the phone when he heard what sounded like a gunshot.

"She wasn't talking to anyone at the time of the shooting," Mesa Police spokesman Jerry Gissel said Tuesday.

Blasnek was shot at the corner of Grandview Drive and Gilbert Road as she walked along the sidewalk about 11:15 p.m.

She died a short time later at the hospital.

Police still haven't determined whether the shooting is the latest in a 14-month Valleywide spree committed by the Serial Shooter, who police believe is responsible for five deaths and the wounding of people and animals.

In all, police believe he is responsible for 35 shootings.
