The Chandler Unified School District governing board on Wednesday night voted 5-0 to close Erie Elementary School as a neighborhood school in the 2012-2013 school year and use the site for another purpose in the future.

The board approved boundary changes for students that will send them to Conley, Hartford Sylvia Encinas and San Marcos elementary schools when classes begin for the 2012-13 school year. There are about 450 students who attend Erie, with 250 of them living in the square mile around the campus.

The move sets the stage for a future decision to use the Erie campus as site to house what is now known as Hamilton Prep, which currently leases space in a church. The district would like to expand Hamilton Prep to serve seventh through 12th grades and more students.

About 30 people from the Erie community attended the meeting, some speaking out against the change, district spokesman Terry Locke said.
