A family friend of an 11-year-old girl who was possibly raped, impregnated and infected with a sexually transmitted disease was arrested Friday after police identified him as a suspect.

Enrique Jacobo-Valdez, 18, was taken into Maricopa County sheriff’s custody after he tried to flee from the girl’s home near Buckeye as police responded to a call from the child’s grandmother. In the phone call, the grandmother claimed she found the child locked in a bedroom, police say.

Jacobo-Valdez had a warrant out for his arrest on unrelated drug charges and is in the country illegally.
