Mesa is seeking applicants for its next Citizen Police Academy, which is set to begin Sept. 1 and run through Nov. 10. Classes are held Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at various police facilities, and a Saturday class on Oct. 23.

The academy offers classroom presentations and hands-on experience to show law enforcement's role in the community. The 12-week program includes presentations on use of force, criminal and accident investigation, homicide, gangs, narcotics, the crime lab, SWAT, bomb squad, aviation and more.

Potential candidates must be 19 or older, live or work in Mesa or be related to a Mesa police employee. Participants cannot have a felony conviction or a misdemeanor arrest within a year of applying. Also, they must pass a background check. Applications are available at www.mesaaz.gov/police.
