Two men are dead after a double-shooting in Tempe’s Hollis Park neighborhood, an event believed by police to be a murder-suicide.

Tempe police say the shooting happened about 10 a.m. Monday at a residence in the 3300 block of South Oak Street at the Park Riviera apartment complex, south of Southern Avenue near McClintock Drive around the corner from Hudson Elementary School.

Tempe police identified the two men as Edmund Keller, 30, who was shot by Landis Casner, 24, before Casner turned the gun on himself.

Police say Casner was outside the front door of the residence and when Keller answered the door he was shot by Casner. While a motive still is under investigation, police say the shootings appear to be a planned event, and Casner may have had an infatuation with an ex-girlfriend of Keller’s, who lives out of state.

Residents of the older neighborhood who lived in the same two-story apartment building where the two deceased men lived said they heard a commotion and a woman scream shortly before police arrived.

After police arrived, officers tried talking Casner out of shooting himself while emergency crews performed CPR on Keller.

One of the men was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead; the other man died at the scene.

Officers believe the shootings are an isolated incident.

Nearby Arredondo Elementary and McClintock High schools, as well as Hudson, were in a brief lockdown.

As onlookers gathered in the neighborhood to look down Oak Drive, Katie Monti, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 35 years, told the Tribune the residents who live in the Hollis park neighborhood — filled with a mixture of homes, apartments and condominiums — feel comfortable there and know it’s one of the nicest areas in the city to live in.
