Three local teachers were recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona for their dedication to combating childhood obesity.

Stephanie Estfan, a fifth-grade teacher at Mesa's Barbara Bush Elementary School; Heather Johnson, a fifth-grade teacher at Chandler's Jordan Elementary School, and Nancy Foote, a fifth-grade teacher at Centennial Elementary School in Gilbert, were praised for their implementation of the Walk On! Challenge.

The Walk On! Challenge is a school-based fitness program that encourages fifth-graders to exercise for 60 minutes each day in February. The program is free to schools and run in the classroom by teachers.

Fifth-grade teachers who registered for the Walk On! Challenge and implemented it in their classrooms were eligible to apply for a grant.
