Nonprofit organizations from Mesa and Chandler have received $20,500 from Cox Charities, the employee-funded philanthropic arm of Cox Communications.

Mesa-based organizations include Child Crisis Center's emergency Shelter Program, $5,500; East Valley Children's Theatre's Bringing Smiles to Children, $4,500; A&A Cottages Inc.'s EMPOWER program, $5,000; and Childsplay Inc.'s School Touring Program, $3,500.

Also, the Chandler Education Foundation received $3,500 for its Destination College program.

The donations were part of nearly $270,000 in grants given to 49 nonprofit organizations in the Phoenix area this year by Cox Charities.

The money was raised through employee-driven fund-raising events and personal contributions throughout the year. Since its inception in 1996, Cox has awarded more than $2.4 million to Arizona charities.
