The East Valley Jewish Community Center on Sunday is scheduled to officially celebrate its move to Chandler after more than 30 years in Tempe.

Center officials first started refurbishing a vacant drug store at Alma School and Ray roads last year and actually opened its school and day care facility in August.

The center also will have a new name: The Barness Family East Valley Jewish Community Center, named after Ron and Daron Barness, who recently gave $600,000 to the center.

"It’s larger than what we’ve had in the past," said former director Ilene Blau, who retired last week after almost 20 years at the center.

The center’s new director, Steve Tepper, took over Thursday.

Officials with the center began looking for a new permanent home more central to the East Valley’s massive growth in recent years.

"The community has totally exploded," Blau said. "So what was the center of the community 30 years ago isn’t so now."

The East Valley Jewish Community Center is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the East Valley since 1972. It is a membershipsupported organization that provides child care, educational, social and recreational programs and is open to the entire community.
