A House vote Wednesday to require a U.S. flag in every public school, community college and state university classroom turned into a debate over the true nature of patriotism.
The 35-19 vote mandates that the governing boards of schools and community colleges purchase one flag, at least 2 by 3 feet, for each room, along with the necessary hardware to display it. The legislation, HB2583, also mandates these flags be manufactured in the United States.
Another provision imposes a similar requirement on the state Board of Regents.
The legislation is being pushed by Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa.
