A former Mesa legislator known for sponsoring the state's anti-illegal immigration law is apologizing for comments he made about the Colorado movie theater shooting that some interpreted as an attack on the victims.
Former state Sen. Russell Pearce said Friday on Facebook the shooting was heartbreaking and that lives were lost because nobody acted to stop the shooting that left 12 people dead and dozens wounded.
Pearce apologized on Monday.
His latest Facebook post says he wrote his original post while concerned about the fate of a young woman who was at the theater and that he's since been moved to learn of what he called "great acts of courage" in the theater.

It's abhorring the way politicians use personal tragedies as a platform for their bigotry.
I am an american citizen who loves this country and am sick of Arizona politicians showing their hatred to the rest of the country and world. What happened to clean politics? Mr. Pearce, there is a reason you have lost a recall election.

This is just a start, Russell. Now apologize for all the other hate and venom you have spewed all these years. And while you are at it, apologize for the domestic abuse and the criminal children you raised
